Main Street Program
In 1995, it became clear that there was a need to revitalize the downtown commercial district. With the malls and superstores, people forget how important downtown Stroudsburg and the historic commercial buildings were in reflecting the community's heritage. Downtown Stroudsburg is unique in many respects. The geographical location of Stroudsburg provides an excellent destination for residents of New York and New Jersey. Stroudsburg has an inherent quaintness to its appearance, which needs to be developed and marketed.

A healthy downtown is crucial to the heritage, economic health, and civic pride of the entire community for several reasons. A healthy downtown retains and creates jobs. It also means a stronger tax base. A healthy downtown increases the community's options for goods and services, whether for clothing, food, and professional services or for housing and entertainment. Our downtown is a symbol of community caring and a high quality of life promoting our heritage and homogenizing our Borough's appearance. These are the factors that influence business and family decisions to locate here.

A public-private partnership between the borough government and the Jacob Stroud Corporation led to the development of the Main Street Program. The program focuses on transforming downtown Stroudsburg into an area that has extraordinary appeal both to residents and visitors.

Some of the recurring events that are held downtown are the Memorial Day Parade, Pocono Garlic Growers Garlic Fest, Monroe County Farmer's Market (during spring, summer and fall months), Monroe County United Way Super Saturday, the Halloween Parade and Extravaganza, the Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration, and Holidays on Main Street through the Christmas season.

Residential Parking Permits and Renewals
The Borough Council has ordained three residential parking districts. Residents of these districts may obtain bi-annual permits for every vehicle they own. The permits allow district residents to park on the street when parking is prohibited for non-residents of the district. The residential parking program is administered by Stroudsburg Borough through its Ticketing Department.

The Hill District Residential Parking permits expire September 30th of odd number years. Consequently, residents of the Hill District (the blue signs denote the area) acquire new permits in September 2003.

The South Side District Residential Parking permits expire on November 30th of odd number years. Residents of the South Side District (the green signs denote the area) acquire new permits in November 2003.

The West Side Residential Parking permits expire October 30th of odd number years. Residents of the West Side District (the brown signs denote the area) acquire new permits in October 2003.

Shade Tree Advisory Board
Trees are and always will be, an integral part of our community. Because trees are living, growing, dynamic parts of our Borough, special care must be taken to ensure that they provide the largest possible benefit for the longest time. Recognizing the long-term benefits brought about the reformation of the Shade Tree Advisory Board. The goals of the Board are to increase the number and rate of new plantings; decrease the rate of loss of old growth by carefully managing and supervising utility pruning; provide guidelines and policies for proper maintenance; and communicate to residents the Borough's policy on trees.

Leaf Pick Up
Each fall the Stroudsburg Street Department picks up leaves through out the borough.

Streets with alternate-side parking will have the leaves picked up on two days per week-once on the day designated on the schedule and once on the day for alternate parking. DO NOT put tree limbs and shrubbery trimmings in the leaves because they will damage the leaf machine.
